f there is one thing more certain than the longevity of rock and roll, it is the inevitable failure of my New Year’s resolutions. Each year I make them, and each year they sputter out and die like a cheap CD player bought on the black market.
So this year, rather than set an impossible goal that will leave me feeling frustrated and full of failure, I’m taking a different approach that will bring me closer to God … and I must give Bono some snaps for that. You know, Bono, lead singer from that nice little Irish band called U2?
While U2 is not expressly a Christian band, Bono has publicly professed his Christian faith and often weaves Scripture and Christian beliefs through their music. So – back to Bono. Yeah, well Bono spoke to me (not personally) through one of his songs and reminded me that each day I should humble myself and ask God to use me for his will. Who knew God worked through iPods and Irishmen with wraparound sunglasses?
That seems so much more worthwhile than putting year-round pressure on myself to drop a jeans size or organize my kitchen drawers, you know? By becoming completely available to God, there’s no limit to how he can use me in the lives of others. I want others to see God through me, but I needed that simple reminder that I must ask for that wonderful opportunity from God each and every day.
Here’s an excerpt from the song, “Yahweh,” which happens to be one of my all-time favorite songs, not just my top pick from all the U2 tracks. (Google the entire lyrics if you wish, but you must know it’s even better performed. Live. Just visit YouTube for the full experience in your choice of cities ….)
Take these hands
Teach them what to carry
Take these hands
Don't make a fist
Take this mouth
So quick to criticize
Take this mouth
Give it a kiss
Out with New Year’s resolutions, in with being inspired to seek out God’s will and be a blessing to others. It’s going to be a great 2008!
But if from there you seek the LORD your God, you will find him if you look for him with all your heart and with all your soul. (Deuteronomy 4:29)
