s the TV show “American Idol” nears a decade of seasons, a steady crop of former contestants constantly releases new albums. Among the din of new music and media buzz, Season 6 finalist Phil Stacey stands out in the crowd of American Idol alums. With his sophomore release “Into the Light,” Stacey proves that he’s in it for the long haul and not just a short jaunt.

“Into the Light” (Reunion Records) features 11 new tracks. Die-hard “American Idol” fans and true lovers of pop music will appreciate this album. Additionally, Phil Stacey’s music appeals to a broad spectrum of age groups, whether young people or parents. “Into the Light” would make a great CD for the car that can be enjoyed by the entire family.

The first few moments of the track “Inside Out” resemble a piano-driven intro to a Michael Buble song. However, the song has much more to offer. For example, the song proclaims that God is the one who can change us from the inside out. It’s great to be reminded of this concept in a pop song, rather than in a typical worship song.

A solitary highlight of this album (pun intended) is the song “One.” This song proves that the small things matter. One person may feel hopeless in his or her efforts, but this song shows that every little bit helps: “One drop in the ocean, one prayer from your heart, one mercy, one struggle, one cup of cold water, one dollar, one promise even though it seems small. Sometimes one is the biggest thing of all.”

Brown Bannister’s production of “Into the Light” allows Phil Stacey’s voice to shine. His vocals definitely take the prominent role on this CD. Soaring ballads and tracks like the up-tempo “Into the Light” and “Some Kind of Love” showcase the vocal prowess of Phil Stacey.

In a refreshing surprise, the bonus track of “Into the Light” could be the next big patriotic ballad. However, unlike many patriotic songs, “Old Glory” is different. It’s not about iconic American activities like baseball or parties with friends. It is however, about uniting as one nation under God. “Old Glory” inspires hope that this country can get back to its Christian roots.
