roup 1 Crew makes music with meaning! That simple proven and re-proven fact resonates with me. Too many bands – even Christian bands – make music without depth or purpose. Unlike much of the rest of the music world, Group 1 Crew (Word Music/Fervent Records) not only released one quality album, but now a second.

“Ordinary Dreamers” is the hip-hop/rap trio’s sophomore release. Its debut release nabbed a Dove Award. I anticipate the group will be in hot contention for numerous other accolades as their career continues – although admirable, award-worthiness is not what hits with me the most.

The biggest influence upon me as a music listener are lyrics that are biblically sound. When I listen to the music of Group 1 Crew, I don’t have to worry about hearing things that don’t match with God’s Word. I love that! I’ll say it again: I love that!

I am even more impressed that I’m saying this about a hip-hop/rap group. Many rappers sling music that is so focused on clever wordplay that it leaves a lack of biblical depth and dependency. Group 1 Crew delivers dapper depth with daring dignity.

This trio often publically proclaims that their music is different. I agree. “Ordinary Dreamers” contains 14 songs of refreshing rap hope. Group 1 Crew’s music doesn’t dwell in self pity. It makes its habitat in health and holiness. Young people – and those further along in life – need music like this. “Ordinary Dreamers” consistently reminds listeners of their identity, freedom and joy in Christ.

I like every song on this album. However, I will share two favorites.

“Keys To The Kingdom,” the first single off the album, is catchy and empowering. It’s wonderful to be reminded that God gives his children power and authority. “Keys To The Kingdom” challenges listeners to act in their designated role as a kingdom advancer and also rightly relays that the kingdom will not be advanced unless we move it.

“Bring The Party To Life” features the sonically enjoyable Mr. Talk Box. His familiar voice can be found on a couple of tobyMac albums, in case you’re wondering where you’ve heard him before. Don’t let this song title fool you into thinking it’s pointless. Containing the lyrics, “We see ‘em dead/Get the oxygen/We got a new thing about to begin,” it’s obvious that this trio is out to wake up a world being lulled to sleep by a cunning enemy.

For more information on Group 1 Crew and to listen to their music, check out their website at http://www.group1crew.com.
