apturing the impact and significance of Jesus’ sacrifice and triumph on the cross, Andrew Peterson’s “Resurrection Letters: Volume II” perfectly fits into this Easter season. “Resurrection Letters: Volume II” is his newest Christian folk musical release from Centricity Music. However, the songs and lyrics of this CD are fitting at any time of year and not just during Easter.

Eleven charming songs sing of restoration, resurrection and recovery, resulting in a present-day application to historic Bible stories. Ironically, “Resurrection Letters: Volume I” has not been written. A founding member of the Square Peg Alliance – think trying to fit a square peg into a round hole – Peterson isn’t concerned with fitting the mold of society. I commend him for that.

The most memorable song of this entire album would have to be “Hosea.” Since hearing the song for the first time, Peterson’s haunting utterance of the name Hosea has echoed in my mind. Every Bible lesson teacher should use this song to further illustrate the point of how what Hosea did for his harlot wife models what Christ did for us. That biblical story is not told enough. I’m grateful Peterson chose to write about it.

Hidden in the peppy rhythm of the song “Rocket” is a modern-day parable.

Peterson ingeniously compares Jesus’ resurrection to a rocket in the song of the same name. “Rocket” is quite enjoyable with its upbeat rhythm. However, hidden beneath the peppy rhythm is a modern-day parable. For a unique and unexpected tale of Jesus’ accomplishment on the cross, you must listen to that song.

“I’ve Got News” is a great answer to today’s post-modern, ever-questioning society. Peterson simply testifies to the truth in the short, conversational song. Though quiet and unassuming, the song would actually be a good motivator for those about to share Jesus with a friend.

Promptly following “I’ve Got News” is “The Good Confession (I Believe).” Peterson follows up the intro of his good news by actually sharing his confession of who Christ is and what he did through song. It’s my opinion that “The Good Confession (I Believe)” is a great way to end this pensive project.

Though Peterson’s music possibly gets lost among the din of our loud and busy lives, it’s well worth it to take the time to soak up his lyrics. The stark contrast between brash, in-your-face music and Peterson’s laid back, folk style requires the listener to invest more time ingesting his music and lyrics. That investment brings great returns.
