anadian rockers Downhere are back with another quality CD offering from Centricity Music. “Ending Is Beginning,” released in September 2008, showcases Downhere’s familiar and enduring duo-lead vocalist set-up as well as a fresh set of captivating, thought-provoking songs. Although the voices of lead singers Jason Germain and Marc Cartel are quite different, the two blend marvelously together both vocally and as songwriting partners.

Arriving over two years after their last full-length studio album – “Wide Eyed and Mystified,” – “Ending Is Beginning” challenges and engages the listener to take action. Downhere’s lyrics stir listeners to move from any area of passivity in their lives to purposeful activity. Not every band (even Christian bands) can do that with their music. “Ending Is Beginning” is another disc of excellent evidence that this band is special. What makes the music and ministry of Downhere so impacting is their humbling ability to take personal responsibility for the consequences and influence of their lives … both good and bad.

Two of the CD’s songs, “Come Back Home” and “The Problem,” are prime examples of Downhere’s humility and truthful testimony. “Come Back Home” speaks of acknowledging brokenness and returning to rebuild what was torn down. “The Problem” clearly states, “There’s a problem with the world and it’s me.” In our perpetual culture of blaming others for what’s wrong in the world, “The Problem” poignantly reminds listeners to take an honest assessment of their own lives before blaming others.

“My Last Amen” packs a lyrical punch.

My absolute favorite song on the album is “My Last Amen.” Be it the dancing rhythm, the belt-it-out potential, Jason’s lower-octave crooning or the “ba-ba-ba-bas,” I just love it! And, typical of any Downhere song, “My Last Amen” packs a lyrical punch.

A sobering reminder of the constant, cosmic battle between good and evil in the world and inside ourselves, “All At War” is a gripping, beautiful marvel. Accurately detailing the areas we experience dichotomies, the song joyously concludes with the reminder that Christians ultimately have the victory in the lifelong war. For those experiencing any spiritual battle, this song is sure to encourage and inspire you to continue pressing on toward the prize.

“Ending Is Beginning” is a must-have album for current Downhere fans and also a great gateway into their music. Downhere’s music comes with a commission to live a life of humble, responsible and stirring eternal impact. However, if you’re looking for light, meaningless rock songs, perhaps this band isn’t for you.
