ebraska-native newcomer VOTA (formerly known as Casting Pearls), releases their self-titled debut album on February 10 with INO Records. With a new name, a new band member, new management and a new label, VOTA has an innovative sound with lots of musical experience and influences. Featuring upbeat songs that are fun to sing, VOTA has great promise and potential.   

I popped in the CD and the first song to hit my ears was “Hard To Believe.” Listening to the catchy tune, I caught myself wondering, “Who is this?  I really like this song. The singer kind of sounds like tobyMac. Actually no, he sounds like a blend of all three members of dcTalk combined.” As a fan of tobyMac and dcTalk, I became an instant fan of both VOTA the band and the CD. If you’re not a dcTalk fan, don’t let that detract you. VOTA is also reminiscent of the dance pop of Maroon 5. Though VOTA sounds similar to other things I’ve heard, their sound is fortunately fresh and their music is unique and interesting.   

“VOTA” offers a great blend of upbeat songs and dramatic ballads to keep the listening interesting. Several songs on the CD feature hooks guaranteeing the listener will walk away singing parts of songs from memory, even after the first listen. Case in point is the second song on the record, “Be Mine.” With just four words, “Be mine for life,” I was totally hooked on that song.

A definite favorite on the album is “Honestly.” The haunting vocals and memorable message of the song really captured my attention. “Honestly” is a perfect song to document the power of God’s grace and mercy in our weaknesses. It’s a surprising call to remember and celebrate the redemptive work of God and the victory of the cross.

Another memorable track is “Bye Bye.” The blend of strings and a dance rhythm demands attention. “Bye Bye” is one of the most unique songs I’ve heard lately. That’s not an easy feat, either.
