Confessions of a Christian Sock Sorter

erhaps one of the most frustrating household chores one ever does is laundry. It’s an unappreciated, never-ending cycle. And it is certainly not a time or place where one might expect to hear from God, but then again you might be surprised.

After struggling to find in a mountain of laundry partners for the dozens of socks that my family wears on a weekly basis, I have been known to toss single socks in the trash. However, it recently occurred to me that socks are quite symbolic of the people and relationships that God puts in our path. It’s made me more sympathetic towards these lonely items of clothing, and now I actually keep them around in hopes of reuniting them with their “sole” mates.

The most obvious parallel is that God clearly intends us to be paired off. He wants us to have a partner in life; just as he created Eve for Adam. Like finding mates to socks, sometimes you go through several possibilities and it can be difficult to find the right match. However, when you seek earnestly to find the intended one, it results in warmth, comfort and a sense of belonging – well worth all the effort!

Some socks are so different that they’ll never match, and some stick together closely.

Socks also come in all shapes, sizes and colors – much like people. And just like the individuals we communicate with daily, they’re all thrown together in numerous spin cycles and forced to interact. Some socks are so different that they’ll never match, and some stick together closely, like dear friendships. They can also exhibit some challenging personality traits – isolation, oddness and, yes, clinginess.

Perhaps the greatest similarity between socks and Christian relationships is the ability to come clean in the wash. Just as our socks carry the dirt of the world as we walk through it on a daily basis, it’s important that we regularly cleanse our hearts through a close and personal relationship with God.

Hebrews 10:22 - "Let us draw near to God with a sincere heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled to cleanse us from a guilty conscience and having our bodies washed with pure water."
