ost people don’t give much thought to the individuals behind the voices in radio and TV commercials. Glenn Hascall is the voice for some Fox Sports spots and has also done voice work for Titleist Golf. He is a Christian comedian who has supplied audio for Fred Passmore’s “Sheep Laughs” comedy podcasts. In addition, he released his own Christian comedy CD, "Sketch.” Glenn’s wife once said, “I know there are a lot of people requesting your voice on projects. Maybe it's because I've been married to you for so long, but ... I just don't get it.” Glenn relates that it is hard to feel important around people who ask him to take out the trash.

The early years

Glenn was born in Torrington, Wyoming, the son of loving Christian parents Gene and Lois Hascall. He credits his father for influencing him to seek the Lord at an early age. His dad always got up at 4:30 in the morning to read the Bible, a practice he still continues. Glenn states the legacy actually started with his paternal grandmother, who also rose early to read Scripture.

Although Glenn does not call his father outgoing, he says his father loves God, his family and his neighbors. While Glenn was growing up, both his father and his mom were in the habit of looking out for others. This often came in the form of sharing meals with those who lived alone or helping those who had lost a loved one. According to Glenn, his family did not even know how to spell ‘social elite.’ “In that type of environment, you learn to rely on family.” In Glenn’s house, love meant action, something he tries to exemplify in his life today.

Watching his father made a huge impact on Glenn. Not many children carry Gideon Bibles to school with them, but that is exactly what Glenn did. Even when he was very young, he had a desire to share Christ.

In Glenn’s own words, “I came to realize that I was a desperate and hardened sinner after a life of selfishness and greed and repented of my sin before I had to endure any hard time in prison. OK … so I was four years old at the time, but I’m pretty certain I was selfish and greedy (at least my older sister thought I was). I really didn’t have any significant rebellious period growing up and was even known to take a briefcase full of tracts and Gideon Bibles to school with me. I regret it now to some degree because I think I was more adept at selling ‘fire insurance’ as an unusual third and fourth-grader than I was at letting others know God wanted to have a relationship with them.”

At one point, Glenn imagined himself becoming a missionary but says he couldn’t imagine himself eating “bug protein and unnamed fruit” and determined he might starve before spreading the Good News.

A busy man

Hascall’s list of past achievements include acting as the general director for Christian Media Inc. and presiding over the town of Terrytown, Nebraska, as its mayor.

Glenn states his involvement with Fox Sports is “another one of those fact-is-stranger-than-fiction things. I have done voice work for people for a very long time, but it was usually on a local or regional basis and rarely was it a paid situation.”

He got a request for an older southern accent voicing a spot for a football team. After some time passed, they notified him that they had selected him. Unfortunately, he never got to hear that spot as the event was already over when he was notified. After some ongoing correspondence, Fox asked him to sign a contract with them.

He is a very busy man, managing KHYM radio station in southwest Kansas, where he is also the morning host. Another of Glenn’s responsibilities includes working as the graphic arts director for the station’s parent ministry, Great Plains Christian Radio. Glenn got started in radio when he said yes to a station manager in Wyoming. “I thought he needed a janitor,” he quips.

Even though Glenn’s day is filled to the brim, he always makes time for God.

What being a Christian means to Glenn

Being a Christian is so important to Glenn that he turned down jobs because they did not fit into the Christian perspective. If it is a job he does not feel Jesus would be in line for, he refuses it.

Glenn states, “My relationship with Jesus affects virtually everything I do. I turned down writing assignments and audio requests because the requested content was not something I was comfortable with, nor did I feel that it was beneficial to my testimony as a Christian.”

Interestingly, Glenn reports that many of the requestors altered their requests when he stated the reasons he would not fulfill them.

No matter if Glenn is finishing a textbook story, working on audio for someone, or is behind a television camera, his faith is always a key element.

Greatest achievement

Glenn feels his greatest achievement is being a husband and father. He met his wife Nancy at a skating rink where he once worked, and they have been married for over 20 years. They have a teenage daughter and a pre-teen son. He states his family keeps him grounded.

His desire is to be the kind of godly family man that Glenn’s father was to him when he was growing up. He relates, “My father is the godliest man I know, and he never failed to take his faith with him everywhere he went. That's a legacy I want to leave my children.”

Glenn and his father no longer live near each other, but they do speak frequently by telephone. His dad often asks him spiritual questions that he is considering. Glenn takes comfort knowing that his dad is still deepening his relationship with Jesus.

Glenn states, “That continues to impress and inspire me.”
