lthough the title of Eric and Leslie Ludy's latest book "Meet Mr. Smith" (Thomas Nelson, 2007) is vague and lacks definite reference, the tag line, "Revolutionize the way you think about sex, purity, and romance," draws a reader's attention. It certainly drew mine. However, if I hadn't taken the time to read the tiny tagline on the cover, I may not have picked up the book. Fortunately, I recognized the Ludy name because I've read a few of their books before.
To the Ludys' credit, they drew my attention from the first page. Since I wasn't familiar with the October 2007 release, I just planned on reading the first few chapters and then giving up if I wasn't interested. A few pages into this unique book, I was drawn in by the allegory of Great Sex and intrigue of Mr. Smith. Besides "The Bride," I'd never read a Christian-based allegory before. Half the fun of an allegory is going along with what seems like a totally crazy storyline.
The crazy storyline may lose some readers in the middle, especially those who pick up a copy just to read just about the sex that the tagline promises. This book is the most intriguing thing I've read in years. Much of the intrigue stemmed from my wondering if I, as a single person, should be reading a book that's about Great Sex. "I'm single," I thought to myself. "I shouldn't be thinking about this stuff, right?"
As the Ludys reassure at the end of the book, it's OK for single and married people to think about the characteristics that make up Great Sex. I'd love to share said characteristics, but I don't want to ruin the hook of the book.
Upon completion of "Meet Mr. Smith," I found myself closer to God - which, based on the title and tagline, is the last thing I expected. As Eric and Leslie reminded, Great Sex just isn't about a man and a woman in marriage. There is so much more, and I'm grateful to be more informed about this subject.
Controversial issues such as oral sex, masturbation, premarital sex and lust are addressed with biblical truth and helpful guidance at the end of the book. As a bonus, readers can ask further questions and read the answers to other issues online at http://www.meetmistersmith.com. |
